Demetris Shammas is a Cyprus-based media artist working across architecture, scenography, lighting, and material-based processes. His practice explores the convergence of digital and physical systems, using code, light, and matter to investigate how form emerges through process.
At the core of his work are custom-coded systems that resist imposing a fixed form, instead establishing a field of potential—responsive, uncertain, and processual. These systems allow spatial and material components to act relationally, yielding environments that unfold gradually, inviting movement, inhabitation, and attentiveness—experiences of transformation beyond mere observation.
Shammas’ work has been presented at international exhibitions and festivals including Venice Biennale (IT), Ars Electronica (AT), Mapping Festival Geneva (CH), Athens Digital Arts Festival (GR), World Expo (UAE), and BMW Art Club (PL). He has participated in residencies such as EKWC European Ceramic Workcentre (NL), Oficinas do Convento (PT), and KulturKontakt Austria (AT), and was a core artistic collaborator of Sessions, a six-month event series of queer happenings at the State Gallery of Contemporary Art – SPEL (CY).
